Interview Preparation: Dress For Success Part 2

What should I wear to an interview?

Dress for the job you want and not the job you have. On one hand, do not dress too casually, and on the other, do not dress too formally for the interview. Also, be sure not to wear uncomfortable clothes or shoes, since discomfort often makes a person seem ill-at-ease.
Making a good first impression can greatly increase your chances of success:
  • Men should wear a clean, well-pressed conservative suit and tie.
  • Women should wear a clean, well-pressed conservative skirt suit.
  • Unless you are applying for a very creative position, keep it simple: a dark suit, solid color shirt, dark socks, dark shoes, a dark belt and a conservative tie (if appropriate – and it usually is).
  • You may wonder, “If my goal is to get noticed and to be memorable, why should I dress neutrally or conservatively?” Unless it’s a very informal company, your interviewer will most likely be distracted or concerned if you deviate from conservative business attire. Remember, you want the interviewer to be focused on what you are saying not contemplating what you are wearing.
  • Some basic wardrobe tips for your job interview:
    • Vertical stripes tend to make you appear thinner.
    • Loud vibrant colors tend to make you look larger.
    • Wear clothing that fits properly. Clothing that is too large will give the interviewer the impression you are out of your element, and clothing that is too small will give the interviewer the impression that you have not taken care of your physical condition.
    • Shoes should be in good repair and properly polished.
    • A belt should be worn and be close in color to the shoes.
    • Empty your pockets of change, paper clips and anything loose that can jingle and make distracting noises.
  • Prepare your outfit for the interview a day or two ahead of time to give you time to clean and press your clothes, polish your shoes and add any missing buttons.
  • Bring a handkerchief. You can use it to wipe off any excess perspiration, touch up makeup or clean up any smudges to your shoes.
  • Above all else, make sure your clothing is comfortable. This will allow you to better concentrate on the interview.
